Das Comenius-Institut trauert um eine gute Kollegin und Freundin aus England. Lesley Prior ist nach langer Krankheit am vergangenen Samstag, 20. April 2024, verstorben. Lesley war über 25 Jahre in europäischen Kontexten als kompetente und warmherzige Gesprächs- und Kooperationspartnerin präsent.
Sie hat eine differenzierte Sicht zum Religionsunterricht in England in den europäischen Diskurs eingebracht und war offen und interessiert für Erfahrungen und Modelle in ganz Europa. Andere Kontexte hat sie behutsam wahrgenommen und mit ihrer Expertise insbesondere zur RU Lehrkräfteausbildung bereichert. Lange Jahre war sie Vorsitzende des europäischen Forums für Religionslehrkräfte EFTRE und Geschäftsführerin der Koordinierungsgruppe für Religion und Bildung in Europa CoGREE.
Im Willkommen-Video auf der EFTRE Website erläuterte Lesley: „All the teachers, teacher trainers and organisations of RE are warmly encouraged to join our ”EFTRE family”. As our name suggests, we offer a forum for everyone to share their experiences, to develop good practices and to learn from one another in a friendly and supportive way.”
Wie keine andere hat Lesley Prior dieses Selbstverständnis von EFTRE als Familie verkörpert. Durch ihre zugewandte, warmherzige Art fühlte sich jede:r willkommen und wertgeschätzt mit den jeweils eigenen Fähigkeiten und Perspektiven, die er oder sie einbrachte. Ihr ehrliches Interesse am anderen und ihr stetes Bestreben möglichst bereichernde Begegnungen auf europäischer Ebene zu ermöglichen, bleiben in Erinnerung.
Lesley Prior haben wir zu verdanken, dass die Situation und der Kontext des RU in England bei ihren Besuchen im Institut authentisch und anschaulich vorgestellt wurden. Auch im europäischen Diskurs um interkulturelle und religiöse Bildung in der Schule war sie bereichernd präsent, so bei Kontakten mit dem Europarat und der Europäischen Union. Ein bemerkenswerter aktueller Beitrag war ihr Vortrag bei der Leitendenkonferenz der Alpika, den sie im September 2021 via Zoom halten konnte.
Lesley bleibt in Erinnerung als eine Kollegin und Freundin, die das menschliche Miteinander ebenso in den Fokus stellte wie die professionelle Zusammenarbeit. Sie war die Art Mensch, der ihren Kolleg:innen kleine Geschenke zu Treffen mitbrachte, die nie verpasste zu Weihnachten und zu Geburtstagen Karten zu verschicken. Entdeckte man eine kleine ‚airmail‘ Marke aus dem Vereinigten Königreich auf dem Umschlag, wusste man sofort, dass darin freundliche und herzliche Worte auf einen warteten.
Wir trauern sehr um Lesley, wir vermissen sie und schließen ihre Familie und Freunde in unsere Gedanken und Gebete ein.

Obituary: The Comenius Institute mourns the loss of Lesley Prior
The Comenius Institute mourns the loss of a good colleague and friend from England. Lesley Prior passed away last Saturday, 20 April 2024, after a long illness. Lesley was part of European contexts for over 25 years as a competent and warm-hearted colleague and cooperation partner.
She contributed a differentiated view of religious education in England to the European discourse and was open and interested in experiences and models throughout Europe. She was cautiously aware of other contexts and enriched them with her expertise, particularly on RE teacher training. For many years, she was Chair of the European Forum for Teachers of Religious Education (EFTRE) and Secretary of the Coordinating Group for Religion and Education in Europe (CoGREE).
In the welcome video on the EFTRE website, Lesley explained: "All the teachers, teacher trainers and organisations of RE are warmly encouraged to join our "EFTRE family". As our name suggests, we offer a forum for everyone to share their experiences, to develop good practices and to learn from one another in a friendly and supportive way."
Lesley Prior embodied this idea of EFTRE as a family like no other. Her approachable, warm-hearted manner made everyone feel welcome and valued for the skills and perspectives they brought to the table. Her sincere interest in others and her constant endeavour to facilitate enriching encounters at European level will be remembered.
It is thanks to Lesley Prior that the situation and context of RE in England was presented authentically and vividly during her visits to the Institute. She was also an enriching presence in the European discourse on intercultural and religious education in schools, for example in contacts with the Council of Europe and the European Union. A notable recent contribution was her presentation at the ALPIKA Leaders' Conference, which she was able to give via Zoom in September 2021.
Lesley will be remembered as a colleague and friend who prioritised the human and social dimension as much as professional collaboration. She was the kind of person who brought her colleagues small gifts to meetings, who never failed to send cards at Christmas and for birthdays. If you spotted a small 'airmail' stamp from the UK on the envelope, you immediately knew that friendly and warm words were waiting for you inside.
We deeply mourn the loss of Lesley, we miss her and keep her family and friends in our thoughts and prayers.
